The private is political
2021
Bodies of women are pressed into shape, retouched, censored and sexualised. The thesis developed in the 1970s stating that “the private is political“ is therefore still relevant: personal handling and social discourse – with and about female bodies and sexuality – mutually affect and depend on each other. Shifting between motifs that focus on the liberation and destigmatisation of women's bodies as well as images that address the conflict with the still prevailing social pressure on women, this photo series represents a personal examination of this complex of issues from a female perspective. This photo series was commissioned by the intersectional feminist magazine Break*in to visualise the thesis “The private is political“. It is neither to be understood as being universal, nor as an attempt to fully cover this complex topic, but merely captures a small excerpt of the photographer's personal thoughts and experiences.
